Welcome to Our First Issue

It’s finally here:our first newsletter dedicated to keeping our students, volunteers, and partners informed about our activities, growth, and success. CEO experienced many changes and additions in 2005: a new Executive Director, Jessica Beckman; a new Education Specialist, Paula Carrasquillo; and a new Employment Specialist, Jeb Foster. Together with our volunteers, we are dedicated to provide students with the highest quality education and guidance.

In addition to our GED preparation classes, CEO offers literacy and job skill enhancement workshops. Currently we offer workshops in math, computers, nutrition, exercise, resume building, interview approaches, and job readiness. We continuously plan and re&endash;plan our curriculum to better suit student needs. Learning never ends. Our mission is to “foster independence through education” for every student who enrolls with us. We look forward to 2006 and improving communications with our students, partners, and volunteers. Happy New Year!

Focus on Math

Jamie Foster

Introducing Dorothea Steinke: she has a creative and unique approach to teaching math to our GED and SKILLS students:

“When someone is wearing a Halloween mask and all you can see are their eyes, how do you know the nose, lips, cheeks, and eyebrows are still there? Because we expect them to be there, because we know the parts of the face and the whole face are always there at the same time.”

Many people do not have this “Part and Whole at the same time”understanding about numbers. By directly teaching it, students come to understand the concept and are more able to solve word problems and to know which operation (+, –, ÷, ×) to use.

Books on Tape a Success!

reading

Books on Tape for the month of December was a great success. Amazingly, fourteen students took advantage of the program, and their children and grandchildren received a special gift for the holidays. As a reminder, Book on Tape allows parents and grandparents to share the gift of literacy with the children in their lives. Students select a book of their choice, read the book aloud onto a cassette tape, and CEO mails the book and tape to the child. The program costs nothing and takes only time. Please stop by the classroom to schedule your appointment. Kids love this stuff!

Finding it Difficult Landing a Job?-Speak to Our Employment Specialist

Anyone who has ever been unemployed and on the hunt for a new job knows the challenges of such a task. Luckily for our students in the ICCS classroom, they have the pleasure of receiving help from CEO’s newly appointed Employment Specialist, Jeb Foster.

Jeb offers one-on-one consultations and group focus workshops during the week. From putting together a resume to knowing what and what not to say during an interview. Jeb provides answers and guidance for all students interested. Stop by the classroom Workshop Board and sign up! Also, check out our Job Board every Monday for new postings.

HIRE Tip of the Day: Compose Your Resume!

In addition to completing a job application, a resume offers telling information about yourself to a potential employer: you’re organized and focused on getting the job done!

Spotlight on CEO Volunteers

Jamie Foster

Warren Rubin Interviewed by Jaime Lenninger

Q: What is your background and education?

A: I taught in Industry, but I have no formal education in teaching.

Q: What is your day job?

A: I’m a software developer. I work primarily in web and Windows based applications.

Q: What would surprise people about you?

A: I don’t know. I suppose it would depend on the person and the circumstance. I don’t think I surprise people too much.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve received?

A: Well I don’t know. I’ve been the beneficiary of plenty of good advice in fifty-one years. It’s probably a tie between working hard and staying straight with yourself.

Q: Why do you keep volunteering?

A: Because even more than I’ve been the beneficiary of good advice, I’ve been the beneficiary of help. Help is always in motion. Help should not be static. You should not help me with the expectation that you’re help goes no further. When you help me it becomes my job to help someone else.

Q: Is there anything you would like to add?

A: Something that anybody who has ever volunteered knows is that the people you are helping help you. It is definitely not a one waytransaction. I’ve learned a lot here. I’ve met people I would not have met. I’ve had experiences that I wouldn’t have had otherwise.
